Blast From the Past

I “the average Joe” on the street daily, amateur, movie critique had mixed feelings about this film. On the one hand I was jealous of actor Brandon Fraser who played a 35 year old man and got to make out with Alicia Silverstone. On the other hand however I felt as awkward, out of place and uncomfortable as character Adam Webster; a young man who came out of his sheltered cocoon (actually bomb shelter) after a life time of living beneath the surface. This comedy somehow was beneath the surface. It wasn’t exactly funny enough to make me laugh out loud. At the same time however it wasn’t so bad I couldn’t stomach it’s rather long 112 minute running time. Brandon Fraser played a creative and therefore different role than I’m used to him in. He is usually the out spoken sarcastic action hero who is as a result brave. Alicia Silverstone’s character was the usually spunky, fire cracker, and unique individual she’s come to play so well. The rest of the performances were priceless. These memorable roles include the amazing acting of Christopher Walken and Sissy Spacek. They play the roles of overprotective genius inventor father and his timid, quiet but reluctant wife to perfection. This movie was definitely aimed at a younger more clueless audience. An audience that couldn’t figure out how disappointing this film was considering the four major Hollywood names I just mentioned in the above paragraphs. It’s not that the movie wasn’t fun it was a major let down considering the spectacular cast. Grade C+

A note from an editor!

Hi Matthew,

Thank you for the time and effort you put into this piece, especially on a Saturday morning. I can tell you definitely took good notes of everything that was going on during the event!

We still have some work to do before this piece is ready to print. Your piece has a lot of information, but it doesn’t sound like a news article. What was the point of his speech/presentation? Why was he addressing this audience? What is Vanguard? What does the company do – who does it serve? You spend a lot of time narrating (for example, how he was injured), but did not report on the purpose of the event. You can maybe mention his appearance/joking about it in a sentence or two, but do not take several paragraphs to do so. Also, I like how you mentioned where the name “Vanguard” comes from.

There are a lot of spelling errors in this piece – make sure you proof read each sentence carefully.

I know I am getting back to you a little later I hoped, and I’m sorry about that! But if you have time tonight, please go through my suggestions and try to rework your piece. You can send me what you have tonight/tomorrow morning. Please bring a copy of it to the meeting tomorrow and we will discuss it further from there.

Once again, thanks for your hard work and promptness! Remember this is a learning process, and we are all part of the Waltonian team!

Talk to you soon!
