Ice Princess

I’d like to start off this review by saying I was desperate. I was folding clothes, with nothing to do and nowhere to go for hours. This movie happened to be on TV with limited commercial interruptions it reminded me of a formal acquaintance, so I watched it. I’ll start of by saying it wasn’t as bad as I thought. I’m not saying it was that good either. It was just brainless entertainment to fold my clothes by. The plot was simple, the acting sufficient, and the pace acceptable. Here is the flux of the story a young 17-year-old science wiz is asked to write a paper and make it personal. She takes the assignment on full tilt. She decides to study how figure skaters move and the scientific theory behind it. When filming young skaters it is not enough she dons the skates herself and discovers a talent she never knew she had. While the characters are tired and cliché the storyline is too. There are no surprises in this 98 minute drama and no need for ones either. You know from the beginning where the story is going to end. You can predict particular elements and place money on certain scenarios. This is not such a bad thing; it is not a good one either. This movie came with very few surprises, nor should it. It was a chick flick. A young girls movie viewed and critiqued by a 36 year old bachelor. Disney did not score any points in my book with this film. It was worn out and lame and not the usual gold Disney is famous for. I’m sure that fans will tell me I am not the right demographic for this movie. Well guess what people I am in the middle of reading the Twilight series and love those books like crazy. So don’t judge me on that account. This movie was just plain lame. Not worthy of adding to my Netflix queue and I certainly wont see it again. Sorry Meghan. Grade C-

A note from an editor!

Hi Matthew,

Thank you for the time and effort you put into this piece, especially on a Saturday morning. I can tell you definitely took good notes of everything that was going on during the event!

We still have some work to do before this piece is ready to print. Your piece has a lot of information, but it doesn’t sound like a news article. What was the point of his speech/presentation? Why was he addressing this audience? What is Vanguard? What does the company do – who does it serve? You spend a lot of time narrating (for example, how he was injured), but did not report on the purpose of the event. You can maybe mention his appearance/joking about it in a sentence or two, but do not take several paragraphs to do so. Also, I like how you mentioned where the name “Vanguard” comes from.

There are a lot of spelling errors in this piece – make sure you proof read each sentence carefully.

I know I am getting back to you a little later I hoped, and I’m sorry about that! But if you have time tonight, please go through my suggestions and try to rework your piece. You can send me what you have tonight/tomorrow morning. Please bring a copy of it to the meeting tomorrow and we will discuss it further from there.

Once again, thanks for your hard work and promptness! Remember this is a learning process, and we are all part of the Waltonian team!

Talk to you soon!
