Gnomeo and Juliet

There are some things in this world that are a matter of black and white. In many cases this describes a love affair. In this case however it is more or less a matter of blue and red. Let me explain. Gnomeo and Juliet are two star-crossed lovers who are both garden gnomes. They live in neighboring yards and are known simply by the color of their hats. Their families are in an age-old feud and as a result hate each other with an unrivaled prejudice. When they meet and instantly fall in love they must decide how to proceed with their feuding neighboring clans. This is a cute modern day kid friendly retelling of one of William Shakespeare’s most well known tragedies. It takes place in the suburbs of old London England and is brought to the big screen in the 21st century. The lead characters are voiced by James Mc Avoy and Emily Blunt and they head up an all-star voice cast. Included in the thus mention voice cast are some pretty big names from several decades of movies. They include, Michael Cain, Maggie Smith and even Dolly Parton. They storyline is cute and creative (considering the original source is three centuries old.) The film itself is short at only one hour and twenty-four minutes. The pacing however is perfect. The characters are all cute and lovable and Elton John supplies the soundtrack with some remixing of some of his best known songs like Crocodile Rock and Your Song. This is definitely a film you can take your kids to see and may even enjoy your self as a parent. I a 37-year-old bachelor enjoyed it and I see a lot of movies. Rent it today from Redbox or Netflix. If you don't like it tell me. I may even send you a nickel. Grade B

A note from an editor!

Hi Matthew,

Thank you for the time and effort you put into this piece, especially on a Saturday morning. I can tell you definitely took good notes of everything that was going on during the event!

We still have some work to do before this piece is ready to print. Your piece has a lot of information, but it doesn’t sound like a news article. What was the point of his speech/presentation? Why was he addressing this audience? What is Vanguard? What does the company do – who does it serve? You spend a lot of time narrating (for example, how he was injured), but did not report on the purpose of the event. You can maybe mention his appearance/joking about it in a sentence or two, but do not take several paragraphs to do so. Also, I like how you mentioned where the name “Vanguard” comes from.

There are a lot of spelling errors in this piece – make sure you proof read each sentence carefully.

I know I am getting back to you a little later I hoped, and I’m sorry about that! But if you have time tonight, please go through my suggestions and try to rework your piece. You can send me what you have tonight/tomorrow morning. Please bring a copy of it to the meeting tomorrow and we will discuss it further from there.

Once again, thanks for your hard work and promptness! Remember this is a learning process, and we are all part of the Waltonian team!

Talk to you soon!
