Almost Famous

This is a movie I can definitely relate to and will not soon forget. . It’s about a struggling young writer who falls in love (at first sight) with Kate Hudson. I mean seriously who wouldn’t fall in love with Kate Hudson a first site. She cute, charming, and has an amazingly talented comedic legend for a mother. Not to mention it (this movie) takes place in 1973 the year I was born.

The story is fantastic too. A young 15 year old boy named William Miller (Patrick Fugit) who lives for rock and roll is given the chance to write and expose article on Stillwater for the cover of  Rolling Stone. He is quickly succumb to the groupie lifestyle and travels on the road with them for their concert tour.

He falls victim to a bedlam of beauty, a trinity of horny teenagers including Zooey Descanel and Anna Paquin all while keeping his eyes on the prize. That prize in Penny Lane (Hudson).

This story is both a dramatic piece on the temptations of traveling with a 70’s rock band as well as love story between the main lead male and female protagonist. It is incredibly well written amazingly well acted and magnificently directed by Cameron Crowe.  While Billy Crudup gets top billing as the lead singer of Stillwater. It is the aforementioned Fugit that steals the spot light. He was in a word “incendiary”

The soundtrack is astonishing. Elton John, Simon and Garfunkel and The Who. Just to name a few make this movie a true rock and roll epic. A period piece (written in the 21st century) that will spoken of in many future periods. This movie was nominated for four Oscars including Best Supporting Actress for Hudson. Cameron Crowe did double duty as writer and director. He was reward aptly so for Best Original Screenplay. It did take home Golden Globe statues for Kate Hudson (once again best supporting actress)  and Best Comedy or Musical (it was both).

This is definitely a crowd pleaser. Fun for man woman and older child alike. It is rated R for it’s language crudity and sexual nature. But those aspects are necessary evils in telling a story of this nature. It is about Rock and Roll in the early 70’s and you can’t realistically tell such as story with out such aspects. It’s running time of 122 minutes does not seem like two hours plus when you are enjoying yourself so much. This is definitely a movie for many critics top ten lists and audience enticer as well

Grade A

A note from an editor!

Hi Matthew,

Thank you for the time and effort you put into this piece, especially on a Saturday morning. I can tell you definitely took good notes of everything that was going on during the event!

We still have some work to do before this piece is ready to print. Your piece has a lot of information, but it doesn’t sound like a news article. What was the point of his speech/presentation? Why was he addressing this audience? What is Vanguard? What does the company do – who does it serve? You spend a lot of time narrating (for example, how he was injured), but did not report on the purpose of the event. You can maybe mention his appearance/joking about it in a sentence or two, but do not take several paragraphs to do so. Also, I like how you mentioned where the name “Vanguard” comes from.

There are a lot of spelling errors in this piece – make sure you proof read each sentence carefully.

I know I am getting back to you a little later I hoped, and I’m sorry about that! But if you have time tonight, please go through my suggestions and try to rework your piece. You can send me what you have tonight/tomorrow morning. Please bring a copy of it to the meeting tomorrow and we will discuss it further from there.

Once again, thanks for your hard work and promptness! Remember this is a learning process, and we are all part of the Waltonian team!

Talk to you soon!
