Get Low

The first thing I will say about this movie is, it is unique. I know I say that a lot but in this case it takes on a whole new meeting. The storyline is about a lonely old hermit named Felix Bush (Robert Duvall) who decides to plan his own funeral. The movie takes place in 1938 giving it a completely different look and feel. The soundtrack is good to giving it that small town feeling in a world most people don’t know about. The second thing I will say about this movie is it has a great cast. I already mentioned Robert Duvall as the lead role but I failed to mention Bill Murray as the funeral home director crazy or desperate enough to back this crazy idea. I also failed to mention Sissy Spacek as his (Bush) former love interest or Lucas Black as the young assistant working t the funeral home. They are all excellent and portray their roles quite magnificently. The initial thing that attracted me to this role is the aforementioned cast. It is a great one to start with and is notable to all. Two of the actors are Oscar winners (Spacek and Duvall) and the rest are well known in their fields for excellent acting. It is Bill Murray who gets the spotlight award for this one. His part is played wonderfully and his low-key demeanor is perfect in this role. This movie is definitely one to be watched alone. You will want the time (after it is over) to reflect on life and just what is important to you. There is no romantic flair to this movie nor should their be. It is a drama and a black comedy rolled into one. It has no triumphant ending, no explosions or car wrecks and is not a movie that will leave you tingly all over. It is however an amazing film and one worth watching if you are so inclined. It is available at Redbox or simply add it to your Netflix queue. Pick it up today and tell me what you think. Is it worth watching, or best sent back to the cleaners? GRADE A

A note from an editor!

Hi Matthew,

Thank you for the time and effort you put into this piece, especially on a Saturday morning. I can tell you definitely took good notes of everything that was going on during the event!

We still have some work to do before this piece is ready to print. Your piece has a lot of information, but it doesn’t sound like a news article. What was the point of his speech/presentation? Why was he addressing this audience? What is Vanguard? What does the company do – who does it serve? You spend a lot of time narrating (for example, how he was injured), but did not report on the purpose of the event. You can maybe mention his appearance/joking about it in a sentence or two, but do not take several paragraphs to do so. Also, I like how you mentioned where the name “Vanguard” comes from.

There are a lot of spelling errors in this piece – make sure you proof read each sentence carefully.

I know I am getting back to you a little later I hoped, and I’m sorry about that! But if you have time tonight, please go through my suggestions and try to rework your piece. You can send me what you have tonight/tomorrow morning. Please bring a copy of it to the meeting tomorrow and we will discuss it further from there.

Once again, thanks for your hard work and promptness! Remember this is a learning process, and we are all part of the Waltonian team!

Talk to you soon!
