Casino Jack

The first thing you will probably notice about this movie is the cast. Kevin Spacey plays the titular character and is the marquee name as well. Jon Lovitz plays his right hand man. Together they are the perfect combination of con man and sleaze. They are both roles each perspective actor was born to play (Spacey as the con man and Lovitz as the sleaze.) They play them well to boot. The next question you may have is how do I categorize this movie. What is the film's genre? The film is full of drama. So it might be a drama. The film is also an exaggeration though. They take a character trait and play it to an extreme. Hence the term exaggerate. The theme is a dark one. Hence therefore it is a dark comedy. The aforementioned Jon Lovitz is a comedian so there for this film must be funny. The sad part is it is not. At least this 37- year old curmudgeon, dark comedy hating, film critic did not find it to be. It was entertaining though and that is worth something. Oh by the way. You may want to know the plot of the film. Kevin Spacey play a Washington Dc Lobbyist and Levitz is the television commercial selling mattress salesman Spacey hires to do his dirty work. They more or less get in over their heads early in the film and must dig their way out for the rest. I'd tell you if they succeed but that would make me a horrible critic. You must see the film to find out what happens. In the end the film is worth something. The story line is sound and the actor top notch. The pace is perfect and I was kept interested for the one hour and forty-eight minute length of the film. The premise of the film and the trailer is good enough to get me hooked in. I paid my buck at the Redbox. (Ok. it was a free rental.) I was not however disappointed. Check it out today and decide for yourself. I cannot guruntee you will like it or even that you will get it. It may be worth the dollar anyway to find out. Grade C+

A note from an editor!

Hi Matthew,

Thank you for the time and effort you put into this piece, especially on a Saturday morning. I can tell you definitely took good notes of everything that was going on during the event!

We still have some work to do before this piece is ready to print. Your piece has a lot of information, but it doesn’t sound like a news article. What was the point of his speech/presentation? Why was he addressing this audience? What is Vanguard? What does the company do – who does it serve? You spend a lot of time narrating (for example, how he was injured), but did not report on the purpose of the event. You can maybe mention his appearance/joking about it in a sentence or two, but do not take several paragraphs to do so. Also, I like how you mentioned where the name “Vanguard” comes from.

There are a lot of spelling errors in this piece – make sure you proof read each sentence carefully.

I know I am getting back to you a little later I hoped, and I’m sorry about that! But if you have time tonight, please go through my suggestions and try to rework your piece. You can send me what you have tonight/tomorrow morning. Please bring a copy of it to the meeting tomorrow and we will discuss it further from there.

Once again, thanks for your hard work and promptness! Remember this is a learning process, and we are all part of the Waltonian team!

Talk to you soon!
