The Express

This is the true story of Ernie Davis. The first black man to ever win the Heisman trophy award. The tale starts of in Unionville Pa. A town just Northwest of State College Pa. This is the town the Nitney Lions call home. (hi Joe Pa.) I send out a shout to Joe Paterno because this is the  story is about a young boy and is fantastic mentor of a coach much like the forever aging Mr. Paterno was to so many Penn State players over the years.

This Epic adventure takes place on the fields of Syracuse University however, that my readers is  a 5 to 6 hour drive from State College Pennsylvania. It is an inspiring adventure of one young black man and how he came of age in a horrific time of prejudice and injustice where people where still judged by the color of their skin over nearly a century after the end of slavery and the civil war.

The acing is wonderful. Rob Brown (Finding Forrester) plays the titular character. Dennis quad plays the coach. The always recognizable but never placeable Charles S. Dutton fills the shoes of his maternal grandfather who was more like a pop to him then anyone else before his beloved coach.

The  chronicle is one to tell your children about. It is a yarn to weave at the water color or in the break room. It is happy and sad. Heart wrenching and inspirational and it is not a movie you will let go by the waste side. Throw a log on the ashes and have a fire side chat about this with someone you love. For that sports fan you care about for he or she would love you too. (after this film has ended that is)

While I don’t want to give away the jaw dropping ending it is not one to be stomached lightly. This is one football legend who should have been forgottten. At least he won’t  be in my house from now on. If you see this movie understand wht I am typing.

A note from an editor!

Hi Matthew,

Thank you for the time and effort you put into this piece, especially on a Saturday morning. I can tell you definitely took good notes of everything that was going on during the event!

We still have some work to do before this piece is ready to print. Your piece has a lot of information, but it doesn’t sound like a news article. What was the point of his speech/presentation? Why was he addressing this audience? What is Vanguard? What does the company do – who does it serve? You spend a lot of time narrating (for example, how he was injured), but did not report on the purpose of the event. You can maybe mention his appearance/joking about it in a sentence or two, but do not take several paragraphs to do so. Also, I like how you mentioned where the name “Vanguard” comes from.

There are a lot of spelling errors in this piece – make sure you proof read each sentence carefully.

I know I am getting back to you a little later I hoped, and I’m sorry about that! But if you have time tonight, please go through my suggestions and try to rework your piece. You can send me what you have tonight/tomorrow morning. Please bring a copy of it to the meeting tomorrow and we will discuss it further from there.

Once again, thanks for your hard work and promptness! Remember this is a learning process, and we are all part of the Waltonian team!

Talk to you soon!
