Citizen Kane

Ok, I’ll have to admit I went in to this movie knowing the ending. I didn’t know the importance of the word “Rosebud” or even that is was his dying word. I knew however whom or what he was referring to in his final breath before his demise. I don’t agree with the American Film Institute’s #1 pick in a 1998’s list of Best American Movies. Since I’ve never scene any of it’s 1941 competitors I can not decide righteously whether or not deserves the Oscar it won for Best Original Screenplay. I also can’t derive whether it should have been snubbed for the other 8 Academy Awards it was nominated for. (including Best Picture) It was however a fascinating cinematic feature. At one minute shy of the two hour mark it ran a little long for this 35 year old critic. The feature length picture seemed to drag on at times but most movies did of that era. I must admit I’m used to films made in my life time. Most of those flick are around 90 minutes in length. This film was most notable, fascinating, and enduring for generations to come. The quest to divulge the secret to one politicians, newspaper tycoons and man about towns dying word is also a wondrous journey. It is an original idea that to my knowledge had never been copied, spoofed or paid homage to. It is an ideal that will last generation to come and please audiences ( at times of one) for years to come. Grade B+

A note from an editor!

Hi Matthew,

Thank you for the time and effort you put into this piece, especially on a Saturday morning. I can tell you definitely took good notes of everything that was going on during the event!

We still have some work to do before this piece is ready to print. Your piece has a lot of information, but it doesn’t sound like a news article. What was the point of his speech/presentation? Why was he addressing this audience? What is Vanguard? What does the company do – who does it serve? You spend a lot of time narrating (for example, how he was injured), but did not report on the purpose of the event. You can maybe mention his appearance/joking about it in a sentence or two, but do not take several paragraphs to do so. Also, I like how you mentioned where the name “Vanguard” comes from.

There are a lot of spelling errors in this piece – make sure you proof read each sentence carefully.

I know I am getting back to you a little later I hoped, and I’m sorry about that! But if you have time tonight, please go through my suggestions and try to rework your piece. You can send me what you have tonight/tomorrow morning. Please bring a copy of it to the meeting tomorrow and we will discuss it further from there.

Once again, thanks for your hard work and promptness! Remember this is a learning process, and we are all part of the Waltonian team!

Talk to you soon!
