Born on the Forth of July

This movie was so boring it put me back to sleep. I woke up of so early this Monday morning. I chose this movie and fell back to sleep once it was over. It was just two hours and twenty-four minutes of slowness and boring. Here is the plot in a nutshell. It is the inspirational story of Ron Kovic, who was incidentally born on the forth of July. Tom Cruise plays him quite wonderfully. The acting is the only good thing going in this lame film. The plot is dumb and predictable. The storyline was fresh and original it just seemed to to nevr seemed to go anywhere. At times I admit I forgot what I was watcing. This is not a good sign in a movie. There are scenes I found to be unnecessary. There are characters I found to be uninteresting. All these factors come together to make an boring film. I hate to repeat myself but this film was lame. This is definitely not a film to take the family to. It has full frontal nudity for both sexes. There is sex and plenty of violence. The language is awful too. All these factors can be predicted in an ‘R’ rated war film. What can’t be predicted is how dumb it was. I mean really. How can a war film put one to sleep? Oh well, I am just glad I didn’t pay for this film. I found it for free at On Demand films. This is just another lesson learned. It is also another reason why I can’t stand Tom Cruise. Alas the lesson is learned. I watched a boring film and wasted away my time. I guess such is the life of an amateur movie critic. Grade D

A note from an editor!

Hi Matthew,

Thank you for the time and effort you put into this piece, especially on a Saturday morning. I can tell you definitely took good notes of everything that was going on during the event!

We still have some work to do before this piece is ready to print. Your piece has a lot of information, but it doesn’t sound like a news article. What was the point of his speech/presentation? Why was he addressing this audience? What is Vanguard? What does the company do – who does it serve? You spend a lot of time narrating (for example, how he was injured), but did not report on the purpose of the event. You can maybe mention his appearance/joking about it in a sentence or two, but do not take several paragraphs to do so. Also, I like how you mentioned where the name “Vanguard” comes from.

There are a lot of spelling errors in this piece – make sure you proof read each sentence carefully.

I know I am getting back to you a little later I hoped, and I’m sorry about that! But if you have time tonight, please go through my suggestions and try to rework your piece. You can send me what you have tonight/tomorrow morning. Please bring a copy of it to the meeting tomorrow and we will discuss it further from there.

Once again, thanks for your hard work and promptness! Remember this is a learning process, and we are all part of the Waltonian team!

Talk to you soon!
