The Day After Tomorrow

This movie is about so many things. First off it is a disaster movie. It is a disaster movie of epic proportion. The forecast in the movie calls for a new ice age. At one point they predict the entire northern half of the USA will freeze and the entire southern half should be evacuated. The only question in my mind is evacuated to where. The two main characters in this movie are an overworked scientist named Jack Hall (Dennis Quaid) and his son the math genius named Sam Hall (Jake Gyllenhaal). This movie is also about the love and devotion one father has for his son. He (Jack Hall) walks many miles in the bitter bitter cold to save his son. The only question I had was what will he do when he reaches him. There is also a little love story he between Sam and his cute love interest on the science team with him. All of this unfolds over a time span of just a few days. The story is a good one and the movie is one that is best seen on a big screen. Since it is out of theaters I suggest a real nice home theater. (I am too poor to afford one.) This movie has some breathtaking cinematography and vivid special effects. This film looses a lot on the small screen and is not the greatest DVD rental. The acting in this movie is fine and the story line is good enough to pass muster. It is however just another disaster movie. It is nothing new to write home about and will not (or should) make anyone’s home movie collection. I have seen all the small pieces of this movie in other better films. Those films were more intriguing and kept my interest better. While I did enjoy this movie it was nothing really spectacular and I will not regret returning the Netflix envelope to the mailbox. The characters were all seen in other films. So none of them deserves any special acknowledgement. I will give this movie props however for being the largest scale disaster movie I have ever seen. Most movies simply destroy a city or two. This one took over the entire continental US. Then again I am reminded of movies like Legend and I Am those film make this movie seems only minuscule. This movie will leave with more questions then answers and should not be taken to seriously. There are a few reality leaks too and the writer are not consistent in answering them. The biggest one that came to mind for me is where is the hospital depicted in this film and how does it still have working lights and connecting land lines. Grade C+

A note from an editor!

Hi Matthew,

Thank you for the time and effort you put into this piece, especially on a Saturday morning. I can tell you definitely took good notes of everything that was going on during the event!

We still have some work to do before this piece is ready to print. Your piece has a lot of information, but it doesn’t sound like a news article. What was the point of his speech/presentation? Why was he addressing this audience? What is Vanguard? What does the company do – who does it serve? You spend a lot of time narrating (for example, how he was injured), but did not report on the purpose of the event. You can maybe mention his appearance/joking about it in a sentence or two, but do not take several paragraphs to do so. Also, I like how you mentioned where the name “Vanguard” comes from.

There are a lot of spelling errors in this piece – make sure you proof read each sentence carefully.

I know I am getting back to you a little later I hoped, and I’m sorry about that! But if you have time tonight, please go through my suggestions and try to rework your piece. You can send me what you have tonight/tomorrow morning. Please bring a copy of it to the meeting tomorrow and we will discuss it further from there.

Once again, thanks for your hard work and promptness! Remember this is a learning process, and we are all part of the Waltonian team!

Talk to you soon!
